HOW IT WORKS

The crystalens is designed to mimic the eye's natural process of accommodation. Used in conjunction with standard cataract extraction methods, the crystalens was designed to provide a continuous range of vision, from distance to intermediate to reading vision without total dependence on glasses or contact lenses.

Lens Implants

When the eye?s natural lens clouds, a cataract operation can remove the cloudy lens and replace it with an artificial Intra Ocular Lens (IOL). The IOL allows the eye to focus. Modern medicine has given us several choices to allow patients a fuller range of vision and possible independence from glasses & contact lenses.

  1. Fixed Focus Intra Ocular lens has been used for the last 30 years and corrects vision to a single fixed focus, usually distance, although it can be focused for near. Patients typically must use glasses to see near, intermediate or both. This lens gives the best vision at one distance only-usually far away and excellent quality of vision.

  2. Accommodating Intra Ocular Lens (Crystalens) uses the eyes' natural muscle to change focus for different distances giving the most natural vision. If you are over 40, you understand how frustrating near vision can be. While nothing will make an older eye focus like a 20 year old eye, this IOL allows most patients to regain some focus for near tasks. Vision quality is very good since the optic is the same as the fixed focus IOL. It works by having very flexible legs inserted into the eye muscle which allows the lens to move back and forth to focus. It may take as much as a year for the muscle to gain strength enough to focus and you will probably need glasses for some near tasks. In addition to excellent distance and quality of vision, this lens gives vision at intermediate ranges i.e. watch, cell phone, computer, shopping, speedometer, etc.

  3. Accommodating Intra Ocular Lens (ReSTOR) is an alternative lens that uses apodized diffractive technology (similar to technology used in telescopes and microscopes) to give patients great near vision with small sacrifices to intermediate & distance vision. This means that many patients can read the text on items such as prescription bottles, magazines, newspapers and phone books. While also providing the ability to see items at a distance free from glasses or bifocals.

  4. Toric Intra ocular Lens (Acrysof) is an IOL with a certain degree of power that is placed in the lens at a precise location to compensate for astigmatism. The unique design of the AcrySof Toric IOL makes it possible to significantly improve uncorrected distance vision in patients with astigmatism, but does not eliminate the need for reading spectacles.
COSTS:

*Medicare and most insurances cover the Fixed Focus IOL after cataract removal. However, the Accommodating (for presbyopia) & Toric (for astigmatism) implants are not covered and must be paid by you personally.
*Patients who select an IOL upgrade will receive the standard insurance reimbursement for cataracts surgery, and now can pay privately for the presbyopic or astigmatic portion of the treatment.
*We will bill your insurance company for the covered portion of your procedure and you for the non-covered service (IOL upgrade)

*Please know that it is our goal to make the implant upgrade affordable for all of our patients through our low monthly finance plan (Care Credit), so that you can achieve your personal best vision possible.
